What to Do If You Suspect a Gas Leak

If you smell gas or believe there may be a leak at your property, follow these steps immediately:

Step 1 - Leave the Property

Get all people and pets out of the building straight away. Do not stop to collect belongings.

Step 2 - Do Not Use Any Electrical Switches or Appliances

Do not turn lights on or off, use your phone inside the building, or operate any appliances. Even a small electrical spark in the presence of gas can be extremely dangerous.

Step 3 - Shut Off the Gas Supply If It Is Safe to Do So

If you can safely reach the gas meter or LPG bottles without entering the affected area, turn the isolation valve to the off position. For natural gas, the meter is usually located at the front of the property near the boundary. For LPG, the isolation valve is on top of the gas bottle.

Step 4 - Ventilate the Building

If it is safe to do so without entering a heavily affected area, open windows and doors to allow gas to disperse. Do not use exhaust fans or any electrically operated ventilation.

Step 5 - Call Dr Plumbing & Gas and Your Gas Supplier

Once you are safely outside, call Peter on 0433 087 906. Also notify your gas supplier so they can assist with isolating supply if needed. Do not re-enter the property until a licensed gas fitter has confirmed it is safe.

Signs You May Have a Gas Leak

Not all gas leaks are immediately obvious. Be alert to the following warning signs at your Gold Coast property:

  • A smell of rotten eggs or sulphur- natural gas and LPG are odourised specifically so leaks can be detected by smell
  • A hissing or whistling sound near a gas pipe, appliance connection, or meter
  • Dead or dying plants in an area where a gas line runs underground - gas displaces oxygen in the soil
  • Unexplained physical symptoms including headaches, dizziness, nausea, or fatigue, particularly when at home
  • Pilot lights that repeatedly go out or burn with an unusual orange or yellow flame instead of blue
  • Appliances that are not performing as efficiently as usual - higher gas bills without increased usage
  • Bubbling in wet or flooded ground above where a gas line runs

If you notice any of these signs, do not try to locate the leak yourself. Call a licensed gas fitter immediately.
